ESOP III: Fasttrack to Fame & Fortune

How would you like to stuff your wallet with billions of ISK for a couple of hours of effort? With a little luck and a little skill, that is exactly what the winners of the third EVE Online Series of Poker will do when this prestigious tournament concludes on Saturday, July 25. Take a look at the potential pot size and payout percentages, based on a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 50 players:

Tournament Pot Size
# of Players -- Pot Size Range
10 --- 20 Billion ISK
11-18 --- 22 - 36 Billion ISK
19-27 --- 38 - 54 Billion ISK
28-50 --- 56 - 100 Billion ISK

Tournament Payout
# of Players -- Places Paid -- Winnings per Place
10 --- 1st-3rd -- 50% / 30% / 20%
11-18 --- 1st-4th -- 46% / 27% / 17% / 10%
19-27 --- 1st-5th -- 42% / 25% / 15% / 10% / 8%
28-50 --- 1st-6th -- 40% / 23% / 13% / 10% / 8% / 6%

Do the math...I'm sure you'll agree it's enough to get any capsuleer excited enough to wonder, "How do I sign up?!" I'm glad you asked. The details for the tournament are available here, but for those not familiar with EOH, here's a quick summary of what you need to do to enter.
  1. Read the official ESOP III thread.
  2. Create an account at EOH, as described here. If you have questions or need assistance in creating your account, feel free to evemail Mynxee or EOH Mynxee (or comment in this thread). I'll be glad to help you sort it.
  3. Send the buy-in amount (2.1 Billion ISK or 2.05 Billion ISK if you qualify for early regisration) to Selene D'Celeste. Your name will be added to the player list in the official thread.
Did the amount of the buy-in give you pause? For many, that is a lot of ISK. For others, not so much. If you'd like to enter but don't have the buy-in fee, consider getting a sponsor or playing in one of the ESOP III satellite tournaments that senior bankers will offer between now and the big game. Satellites will be either 10-player games with a 210M ISK buy-in or 20-player games with a 105M ISK buy-in. Each satellite winner gets a seat in ESOP III. Again, details are in the official thread. Dates and start times for satellites will be posted in that thread by bankers as they are scheduled, so keep an eye on it if you're interested in playing to win a seat in the big game. Better yet, join the in-game channels EOH POKER and EOH GAMES and watch for ESOP III satellite announcements and information (as well as our everyday tournament announcements). If you would like to see a satellite scheduled for a date/time that is convenient for you, please comment below or send an email and we at EOH will do our best to accommodate the most popularly requested times.

About EOH

For those not familiar with EOH, we are the New Eden community's most established poker service. With a large number of very active players, we have ring games running non-stop and tournaments offered practically all the time. I'm proud to be affiliated with this very professional service as a Senior Banker. You can learn more about EOH's offerings and reputation in this thread.

EOH Quickstart Instructions

So how exactly do you play in this (or any) EOH tournament? It's simple--just follow these steps:
  1. Log in to EVE and join the EOH POKER and EOH GAMES channels. EOH POKER is where bankers and players chat; EOH GAMES is where tournaments are announced by the banker who is hosting them (only bankers may speak in that channel).
  2. Send the buy-in ISK to the banker hosting the tournament you wish to enter.
  3. Open the EOH Poker client in your out-of-game browser and log in with your EOH account details.
  4. Click the Tournaments tab.
  5. Select the table at which your tournament will be held and click Register.
  6. Begin playing once the tournament fills and the banker has started the game (the table will open automatically in your browser).
  7. Once the game is over, if you are a winner, type "X" and the table number in the EOH POKER channel in-game (to make it easy for the banker to pay you out).
Again, if you have questions about any of this, I'm happy to answer them. We at EOH are very excited about the upcoming ESOP III and hope to see the tournament fill to the 50-player max--which will mean epic winnings for the finalists!

If you dream of suddenly having billions of ISK in your wallet and the ability to buy shiny things for your hangar, the ESOP III tournament might just be your ticket to fame and fortune. Experience in past big tournaments suggests an avalanche of entries will be received as the game date draws closer. Get on the ride now before all the tickets are sold out!

Busy, Busy, Busy!

I was kind of shocked to realize when I posted Just Call Me Penny... that it had been eight days since my last post. Lately it seems there have been more compelling EVE-related activities to fill my available playtime than can comfortably fit--and that doesn't even include logging in to...you know...actually UNDOCK!

As that clever mule Manasi posted (thanks for the blog love, Manasi!), E-ON #16 includes my Insider's Guide to Corp Branding. It's all about how to raise the profile of your corp in the New Eden community. For those interested in that kind of thing, I hope you find some useful tips in the guide. If there ideas or constructive criticisms you wish to share on the topic of corp branding and promotion or the guide in general, please feel free to do so in comments to this post! I am still waiting for my copy of the magazine to arrive, but World's Greatest Editor Zapatero did send me an advance PDF and I must say, the layout looks gorgeous! How DID Zapatero know green is my favorite color?! Anyway...as Manasi reports, this issue also includes content from Kirith Kodachi, FinnAgain, Karox Lominax, and EVEGuru. Nice representation by EVE bloggers! I am working on an article for next issue now, and have batted ideas for future articles around with Zapatero so keep your eyes peeled. If you think you can write well and have something useful or interesting to share with other capsuleers, give Zapatero a shout.

Another project I've been collaborating on with Selene D'Celeste (the owner of EVE Online Hold'Em) is an EVE Online Hold'Em (EOH) Player's Guide. This Guide explains how to get started playing poker for ISK at New Eden's most established out-of-game poker site, with illustrated step-by-step instructions and in-depth information about the types of games offered, plus much more. I submitted the draft for Selene's review a few days ago; once we have it ready for prime time, I'll post a link to it in the sidebar here.

Meanwhile, if anyone has questions about how to get started playing at EOH, I'm happy to answer them. Add my banking alt EOH Mynxee to your addressbook and feel free to convo me anytime. If you already play at EOH and want to add chips to your EOH account, join the EOH POKER and EOH GAMES channels in-game and ask the on-duty ring banker (hopefully me) to do that for you. I usually bank for a couple of hours midday (Eastern TZ) and occasionally in the evenings.

Speaking of EOH, the Eve Series of Poker III tournament is being offered in a couple of weeks. Details are in this thread on the EVE-Online forums. If you're a high roller--or a good player who can get a sponsor--consider buying in and playing your way to fame and fortune!

And finally...a quick shout-out and many, many congratulations and well-wishes for Roc Wieler, whose real life persona is getting married today!

I think that about catches me up...guess it's time to undock the mighty Rifter and see what fun awaits me in Amamake!

Just Call Me Penny...

...because I was literally lost in space for more than a day. Yup, stuck in a wormhole and terribly frustrated in my efforts to probe a way out...so frustrated I was nearly driven to self-destruct my beloved Rapier Lasher and pod just to get home. That's what I get for being lazy and breezily announcing at the end of a fun and productive Bastards wormhole roam the other night that I'd just log out in space and come on home the next day. Ard Unjiio did warn me. (And yeah, he did say "I told you so" later. *grins*) It's also what I get for not really studying and practicing the new scanning mechanics as much as I should have since things changed. The old way, I was an expert. The more recent way, not so much. Come to find out, my barely semi-logical approach was an exercise in madness due to the size of the system, the number of signatures, the way I was deploying my probes, and my failure to really analyze what the results list was telling me.

Havok Pierce to the rescue! This friend and former Bastard ever so patiently shared some excellent, precise tips for configuring my probes (cluster of five, all on one plane, about 30% overlapped) and manipulating them more quickly and effectively to get the system probed and identify the cosmic signatures I needed. These of course were Unknowns, as wormholes are always designated--a key fact which I'd forgotten. Yes, I am a NOOB! Suffice to say that using his recommended approach (and zenned out by the calming effects of three Guiness Extra Stouts), I was able to find a wormhole into null sec in less than 45 minutes. Compared to the many unproductive hours I'd spent probing prior to being enlightened by Havok, this seemed practically instantaneous.

Havok, I am eternally grateful and you will be rewarded, I promise!

I jumped into the wormhole and found myself in Fountain...4-EP12 to be exact. A mere 70-something Less Secure jumps to home, but only 29 with Shorter selected. Hmmm. I really didn't want to look for another wormhole that might offer a shorter route home. That was too much chance for my current mood to tolerate. I also wasn't keen on running 20 high sec jumps in an expensive Rapier. Looking at the route, something seemed funky about the jump calculations. Placid low sec was about 10 jumps away. I knew that neighborhood--and was pretty sure it wasn't 60-some additional jumps from there to Evati. Hmmm. I decided to keep Shorter selected until I got to Placid, then change to Less Secure and see if the route calculated out differently.

As I moved through Fountain into Cloud Ring, most of the null sec systems were deserted, with a couple of people in Local here and there. Things changed in O-ZXUV. Local was busy...with most of them apparently camping the F7C-H0 gate. However, there was no bubble so I was able to warp to 0 and jump. One cheer for cloakiness! A few of them followed me through, plus it appeared there were a few others who'd been on the other side already. While under gate cloak I selected a celestial, clicked warp and instantly cloaked. Got away fine. Two cheers for cloakiness! I was betting they'd have the gate into Alsavoinin bubbled, so I warped in at 70KM for a look-see. Yup, two small bubbles. Fortunately, due to my approach vector, I didn't get caught in them. The path to the gate was clear, so I slow boated my way there under the comforting safety of my cloak. Saw a Drake and a Cerberus come in, but both warped off after a few moments. Local dropped, as well, so I guess they gave up on finding me. After several minutes, I arrived at the gate and jumped into the warm welcome of low sec. Three cheers for cloakiness!

Cloaked in a safe, I consulted the map again and set the AutoPilot to Less Secure. Aha! Now it said there were only 39 jumps between me and home. That was totally doable; I decided to go a few jumps further on and then power down for some much-needed sleep. The next day, I could mosey home and hunt for targets along the way.

So concluded my Lost in Space "adventure"...and you know what I'm thinking this morning, dontcha? Yes. Instead of roaming those 30-some jumps, maybe I should look for another wormhole and get lost again...

New Eden Radio Gets Its Yarr On

I hadn't really listened much to New Eden Radio until one of my piratey associates became a DJ there. Now I have a great reason to tune in on Thursdays from 0100 to 0400. DJ Chainer (aka Chainer Cygnus) plays a "random and extremely diverse" selection of music which is, in the opinion of this fan, extremely listenable. (In fact, my credit card is glowing around the edges from having discovered so much good new stuff that I simply must have!) He keeps things interesting by mixing in pirate stories, singing ransoms submitted by listeners, and interviews with pirates. Even more fun, he is active on Twitter during his entire show so you can chat with him "live" to ask questions and comment about the show.

This very moment I'm waiting to hear the results of tonight's winner-take-all lottery. Sales of tickets total something like 340M ISK. Okay, he's about to announce the winner..... *waits to hear her name* ... DARN IT! Not me! But at least I know the winner, who is a long-time acquaintance and frequenter of my public in-game channel Hellcats Pub. Gratz, Hans!

Tune in to DJ Chainer's show next time you're online Thursdays at GMT 0100-0400. It's most definitely worth a listen! For more information, see his post on the New Eden Radio forums.

And oh yeah, he blogs, too. And owes me a 1v1. :)

EVE Blog Banter #9: Stop Tarnishing My Halo

Welcome to another installment of the EVE Blog Banter, a monthly EVE Online blogging extravaganza created by CrazyKinux. The EVE Blog Banter invites enthusiastic EVE bloggers to address a common topic for a period of one week. Posts run the gamut: short, long, funny, serious, and everywhere in between, but always fun to read! Last month Ga’len asked us which game mechanic we would most like to see added to EVE. This month Keith “Mandrill” Nielson proposes to reverse the question and ask what may be a controversial question: "Which game mechanic would you most like to see removed completely from EVE and why? I can see this getting quite heated so lets keep it civil eh?" Direct questions about the EVE Blog Banter to CrazyKinux. Links to other EVE Blog Banter articles will be listed at the end of this post as they become available.

Life in New Eden is complex enough without having to perform unnecessarily cumbersome and essentially pointless tasks. You know the ones I'm talking about--the ones that make me mutter and/or loudly interject foul language on voice comms or type really bad words in corp chat, thereby tarnishing the shine on my otherwise golden glowing halo. Therefore to maintain my normally angelic demeanor and protect my friends from sudden expletive-laden outbursts, I propose that the following irritations be removed from the game:
  • Inability to contract damaged items. Explain to me just how the hell it is that we can pull market data from systems across a region, contract data from the entire universe, communicate via chat and EVE-mail across New Eden, and yet apparently can't "communicate" (in an implied fashion) with local or remote support crews to repair items we want to contract. Just do the math, tell me how much it will cost to repair damaged items, and let ME decide if I want to pay and continue with contract creation or not. Don't just require me to cancel the contract and tell me tough luck. That's stupid and makes no sense in a universe where spaceships are capable of zipping between star systems and communication to even the remotest regions are instantaneous. It's particularly annoying when I want to contract things that are dozens of jumps away from me.
  • Requiring me to manually stop my training and leave my ship before clone jumping. Just stop the friggin' training and extract me from my ship automatically, FFS--and then pop up a dialog reminding me (if you MUST) that the clone jump will occur when the "session change" (or however you want to humorously describe it in game world terms) is completed. Having to stop skill and leave ship manually is the dumbest time waster EVER. And then...when I'm in my other clone, restart the goddam training for me. Don't you think the coding that transfers my consciousness would have registered what I was training and sent the "restart" command along in the datastream?
  • Being asked for a password for a container that is in my hangar. If I can right click the container and ask it to retrieve the password to my email box, why the HELL are you asking me to type the damn thing in? Let's just assume that if I can easily get the password via a game mechanic, that I already know it...and open the frakking can when I double-click it, without interrupting my process or expecting my senile brain cells to remember the password from one day, week, month or year to the next.
  • Having to view a contract before it can be accepted. I contract stuff between my "business associates" all the time. I'd like to be able to designate any other character as a Trusted Partner. When right clicking on any contract in my journal from a Trusted Partner, the menu would include the word Accept--allowing me to quickly and easily do so. Furthermore, I would like the option to Accept All Trusted contracts at one time. Really, the contract mechanics are beyond annoying.
See what I mean? This shit makes me crazy. Help a menopausal woman out, CCP. Don't make me unleash my Hot Flash Rage on you. Remove these unnecessary irritants and streamline the game so that I can use my energy and innate bad attitude for more important things: like violencing others' ships, taking their stuff, and extorting their ISK.

Yarr!

Hellcats In The News

A bit of a shameless plug here, but I logged in yesterday to see an article about Hellcats as the first item in the in-game news. If you miss the article in-game, you can read it here. It's nice to see smaller corps get some attention alongside all the big alliance news. Thanks to ISD Najax Lergazin for doing a fine job of sharing information about Hellcats with the New Eden community. Also thanks to everyone who agreed to be interviewed for the article.

I wonder if this brief moment of fame will affect the value of my own corpses, especially considering the nice price I sold one for not too long ago. Someone in Local lamented they couldn't find me in space and wanted my corpse. I replied that I had one in my hangar (after having a "business associate" pod me to collect a 240M ISK bounty that had been placed on my head; thank you, Zanphear). Did he wish me to contract it to him? He said yes, so I contracted it for the outrageous price of 100M ISK. To my surprise and delight, he accepted. I mean...it's not like my corpses are THAT hard to come by. Still...maybe I should get out there and pod myself a few more times to benefit from a potential short-term surge in demand! *grins*

Now back to the pew-pew!
